Toutes les videos de Matt Cutts sont disponibles sur Google Video : http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=Matt+Cutts Google expansion : thousands of servers in a "secret" areaAs reported by the New York Times, Google seems to secretely build two new datacenters for thousands of servers. The article, Hiding in Plain Sight, Google Seeks More Power, begins like this: "On the banks of the windswept Columbia River, Google is working on a secret weapon in its quest to dominate the next generation of Internet computing. But it is hard to keep a secret when it is a computing center as big as two football fields, with twin cooling plants protruding four stories into the sky." Google Earth beta4 : Windows / Mac OS X / LinuxGoogle Earth beta 4 is out, as announced on the official Google Blog. Among various improvements, let's note that Google Earth finally runs on Linux (natively, no wine-emulation like for Google Picasa). Google Earth now runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. It's now localized in languages other than English : French, Italian, German, and Spanish. Maps are more accurate, resolution is highers, there are new functionnalities. Don't hesitate to give it a try, this is impressive. Google SpreadsheetAbout three months ago, Google acquired Writely, the web word processor. A month later, Google Calendar was available, even with its Calendar API. It's now one step further, with the new Google Spreadsheet service. Google announced it on it's official blog : It's nice to share, they say. You can take the Google Spreadsheet Tour to see what it looks like. If you're lucky, you can even try Google Spreadsheet, but it has limited access, on a "first-come, first-served" basis. If not, just read the Google Spreadsheet early reviews. Google Calendar is out.The rumour we mentioned one month ago (Google entering the Web Office market) about something called CL2 becomes true : Google Calendar is out! Yes, another Google news, sorry guys. But it's not my fault if nobody ever sleeps at Google :-) If you're interested, read the Google Calendar overview or take the Google Calendar Tour. Google seems to have done it right, one more time : GMail integration, calendar sharing, invitations, reminders, iCal compatibility, etc. Check for yourself, if you have a Google account. Microsoft Ships 'URL Tracer' to Hunt Down Typo-SquatterGoogle created Google AdSense for domains to help maximize revenue on so-called parked pages (yes, those ugly pages full of links that vaguely look like a search engine page). Of course, this attracted a lot of web spammers. They simply use a well-known domain, but with little alterations. That's why they are sometimes referred to as typo-squatters. As typo-Squatters Are Gaming Google and others, some companies are fighting back. And one of them is Microsoft. It's research team developed a prototype, "Strider URL Tracer". That Microsoft tool can be used to hunt down typo-squatters. Google hires Ori Allon and get it's extraction algorithm (Orion)When working on its PhD thesis about "Using Search Engines for Discovery Information Retrieval" at the Artificial Intelligence lab, Ori Allon developped the Orion Search Engine. He patented a new way of exploring the web that could revolutionise existing search engines, according to the Allon's university press release back in septembre 2005. (UNSW: University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia). As that algorithm could improve the relevance of searches, Google, Yahoo! and MSN were very interested. And guess what? Google hired Orion's creator and acquired its algorithm. If you think Google already has relevant results, you're probably right. And it's likely to be improved further. Read the SearchEngineWatch comments for more informations. Google to launch a music downloading service?Last december, Google launched its Google Music Search service. But it probably will not stop there. Forbes reports that Google met with a group of music industry executive and is likely to launch a music downloading service, like the famous iTunes service proposed by Apple. This is rumour for now, but could well become reality in the near future. Google search : new interface ?ArsTechnica reports that Google is testing a new interface for its results pages. The list of their services has moved from the top to the left, and some green indicators appeared near every item. What could this mean ? Putting the list to the left is quite logical, as the number of Google services is expanding : there is no more annoying space restriction as in the horizontal placing. |
